In general, facials offered at a reputable Dermatologist’s office play an important role in complementing your treatment and have an actual benefit on skin. At the Obagi Skin Health Institute in San Gabriel, all treatments are results-oriented, providing you with immediate results. All treatments utilize custom treatment creams, masks, and techniques developed by both Dr. Obagi and myself to enhance your results and to provide your skin with the ultimate benefit.

All treatments start with a crystal-free microdermabrasion, which is an effective treatment to rejuvenate skin, shrink pores, and most importantly, stimulate the regeneration of healthy skin cells (via the removal of dead skin cells). Crystal-free microdermabrasion removes the dead or damaged top-layer of skin by gently exfoliating the skin, while simultaneously vacuuming the dead skin cells away in a sterile and controlled manner. Results are achieved without the adverse effects of loose particles or irritation created by conventional aluminum-oxide based microdermabrasion machines.

A custom mask is then applied to skin according to your skin type and condition. This is followed by properly performed acne extractions (if necessary) and the application of products specific to your skin. Finally, either the Blue LED light or Red LED light is utilized to provide a direct benefit to skin.

Blue wavelengths are very effective in killing the p-acne bacteria, the major source of acne. Blue wavelengths stimulate a biochemical reaction in the bacteria (causing acne) that results in the production of oxygen. The produced oxygen from the biochemical reaction is fatal to the p-acnes. The end result is the reduction in the number of acne lesions after 2-3 days of treatment.

Red LED light utilizes deeper penetrating red color wavelengths to stimulate collagen production and cellular activity in skin to provide anti-aging benefits and anti-inflammatory benefits to skin. Red wavelengths accelerate healing, correction, and results from chemical peels (such as the Obagi Blue Peel®) Fraxel®, and other treatments.

Conventional LED lights or those that can be purchased OTC do not have the proper wave length to stimulate a response in skin. Devices utilized at your dermatologist’s office are far more penetrating and results oriented than those that can be purchased at a department store or performed at a conventional spa.

Proper extraction of acne utilizing a comedone extractor is vital. The skin is comprised of 20,000 (twenty thousand) pores. Improperly extracting using fingertips etc., (as in conventional spa facials) can result in the spreading of bacteria quite rapidly. The end result… the biggest complaint after a Spa Facial, acne breakouts.

At the Obagi Skin Health Institute, in San Gabriel, patients prescribed Accutane and Obagi Nu-Derm® for the treatment of acne are placed on a monthly Acne Facial Regimen to speed up the shrinking of oil-glands and number of active lesions. Those patients undergoing treatment of pigmentation issues are encouraged to have a Whitening Facial™ that utilizes to accelerate correction. Obviously, patients with severe laxity, deeper pigmentation problems or scars, are correctly recommended to have procedures such as, the Obagi Blue Peel®, Fraxel® or other lasers to obtain optimal results.

The most effective results oriented facial offered at the Obagi Skin Health Institute, is the Obagi Stimulation Peel™ (Vitamin-Enhanced). This is a very mild TCA based peel, enhanced with a potent anti-oxidant to deliver maximum results with minimal downtime. Formulated by Dr. Obagi, this mild chemical peel will provide you the equivalent of using 3 tubes of Complex-A (Tretinoin). The upside of the peel is that it takes only 4 days of exfoliation to achieve this result. The peel is performed in less than 15 minutes, with mild exfoliation starting on the second day after the peel and lasting for two more days after that. Results are immediately visible, but skin continues to build collagen cells and further improve for the next 3 weeks. This is the most effective facial treatment to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, smooth pores, and tighten skin. Healing is promoted and results enhanced by utilizing the LED lights immediately after treatment.
